Combined Sewer Overflows

In some older cities such as Newark, the wastewater system is known as a Combined Sewer System in which both stormwater and sewage are collected together in the same pipe and then directed to a wastewater treatment facility. However, after a heavy rain event or snow melt, the system can become stressed and release both storwmater and raw sewage into our waterways. This is known as a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO).

Along with CSOs, flooding is a major problem in Newark. Homes and businesses are damaged by flooding, schools and roads are closed, and traffic ensues. Thus, flooding directly impacts the quality of life for Newarkers. There is not enough green space throughout the city to absorb rainwater, thus it ends up in the sewer system.

Small or large green infrastructure projects throughout the City of Newark can make an impact in reducing flooding and improving water quality.
