Construction is Resuming

Fairmount Avenue Green Street Project

This notification is to inform you of the NewarkDIG/Rutgers Water Resources Program green infrastructure installation at the corner Fairmount and 16th Avenues. This work is designed to address flooding, capture stormwater and reduce the burden on our sewer system while adding greenery and beautification. 

 

This work began on November 12, 2025 and one side of the road was completed in December 2026 (pictured below)! Additional construction in the area will continue on March 2026 and last until June.

Expected Construction Impacts:

  • Estimated three months of construction

  • Use of heavy machinery during construction

  • Demolition and excavation may cause noise and dust

  • Installation of piping and concrete may cause noise, dust and vibrations

  • Partial closure of Fairmount Ave and 16th Ave at times during active work hours

  • Temporary parking restrictions during construction

  • No disruptions to garbage or recycling pick up are expected

Timeline for Next Phases 

Phase 1- Stormwater Planter #2 - Completed 12/2025

Phase 2- Stormwater Planter #5 and #3 will be implemented March 23rd - April 20th

Phase 3- Stormwater Planter #4 will be implemented April 20th - May 1st

Phase 4- Stormwater Planter #6 & #7 will be implemented May 2nd - May 18th

Phase 5- Stormwater Planter #1 will be implemented May 18th - June 1st​

Each planter takes approximately 2 weeks to complete construction. 

After construction, each installation will also be planted with native plants such as Golden Groundsel, Virginia Sweetspire, and Fox Sedge.

Phase 1 Details

As of December 2025

The following progress has been made:

- 1 side of the road completed!

- Silt fencing removed.

- Tree protection barrier transferred to the tree nearest the 16th & Fairmount Avenue intersection closest to the intersection, on 16th Avenue.

- All heavy equipment and trucks removed.

- All plywood barriers removed.

- Signage removed

- All waste material (concrete and asphalt) removed and disposed of.

Phase 1 and 2 Rendering

The rendering on the right displays the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and 16th Avenue. The intersection will be extended to include 1,854 SF stormwater planters, managing stormwater runoff from 51,685 SF roadway. 

​

Existing ADA Accessible ramps and crosswalks will reman intact and new roadway striping and flexible delineators will surround the proposed curb-line extension.

Parking During Construction
 

The map displays the following:

In GREEN: Parking is temporarily restricted but will return once construction is concluded. 

​

In YELLOW: Parking will be reduced the indicated amount of spaces. The smaller unlabeled yellow lines indicate a parking reduction of less than 1 parking space.

​

In RED: Parking is a pre-existing no-parking zones that will remain no parking after construction.
